Notes From the Line-Up - Margaret River

Surf-Stats is proud to present the first in a new series of articles: Notes from the line-up. The premise is simple: find a Surf-Stats fan who knows the contest wave like the back of their hand, then pick their brain on who has been lighting up the free-surf sessions and showing the right kind of pre-contest form. Who better to give us the skinny on Event 3 of the WSL tour than Jack Macaulay? Jack is a Margaret River local whose sister Bronte Macaulay is the current... Read more

Contest Wash-Up: Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach

In 1999, modern-day big-wave charger Shane Dorian held the famous Bell aloft and uttered the now-famous phrase “no kook has ever won Bells”. For me, this quote raises more questions than answers: was he was implying that the venue is guaranteed to sort the men from the boys? Was he suggesting that other venues somehow allow kooks to claim titles? Was he simply calling out to the nay-sayers and reaffirming the fact that he could no-longer be called a kook? Does this make Jordy Smith the best kook on tour... Read more

Contest Analysis - Bells Beach 2016

We’ve cut it a little fine, with less than 36 hours until the Bells waiting period, but all of the wildcards/replacements have been announced and an updated forecast is in the bag; it’s time to ring this fantasy Bell… Conditions Analysing the conditions means having one eye on the forecast; will surfers be heaving Olympic pools’ worth of salty brine off the top of Bells bombs? Are more they more likely to be cursing the shore-dump at Johanna? Know this and you will be well-versed in selecting an appropriate Bells... Read more

Bells Beach Sortable Data

Bells is only days away and, with the QuikPro a distant (and, for some of us, painful) memory, it's a great opportunity to tweak those teams into something resembling more Sci-Phi than Banana Board. Below you will find a range of data fields that you can manipulate in order to wade your way through the selection process. We must however still remind you that our 2016 data projections only take the 2014/2015/2016 result data into consideration. It is also worth noting that less experienced surfers (such as Stu Kennedy) have... Read more

Contest Wash-Up: QuikPro Gold Coast

He’s done it; Matty Wilko has popped his WSL cherry and gotten to home base with a tour event, the dirty minx. We couldn’t be happier for him. Wilko, who has until recently been best known for rollerblades, novelty wetsuits, good times and unfulfilled potential, gave us a glimpse of what we can possibly expect when he takes the tour seriously; smart heat tactics, sustained focus and blistering surfing. Matt’s hit list at the QuikPro included Filipe, Slater, Taj and ADS. We can’t wait to see him at Bells. While... Read more

QuikPro Sortable Data

With less than a week until the 2016 season kicks off, it's time to look at the numbers. Below you will find a range of data fields that you can manipulate in order to wade your way through the selection process. We must however reiterate the fact from our previous article that our 2016 data sets are much more limited in regards to their quantitative significance due to the restrictions placed on us by the WSL. It is also worth noting that Conner Coffin, Davey Cathels, Kanoa Igarashi, Ryan... Read more

A new year and a fresh start for Surf-Stats

This year, Surf-Stats paddles out into the contest season without its former CEO Mike at the helm. His loss is not just significant because of the quality of his content and contributions, but also because of the restrictions that the WSL have imposed on us since his departure. When the WSL signed Mike, they enforced an agreement that stated he would no longer share his comprehensive database of stats with any competitors/rivals (i.e. Surf-Stats). That leaves us in a somewhat tricky position as we rely on our statistical edge... Read more

Injury Update - QuikPro Gold Coast

There are a few injury concerns going into the first event of the 2016 season, with some major confirmations already flowing through from WSL: Sponsor Wildcard - Mikey Wright Trials Wildcard - Wade Carmichael Mick Fanning - watch this space The seemingly constant footage of him finding shade in a super-bank barrel has obviously dispelled any concerns about his ability to surf his home event. He surprised many though with his announcement that he will be making 2016 a 'personal year' and that he will only surf in... Read more
