Contest Wash-Up - QuikPro Gold Coast 2017

Owen fricken Wright. Where did that come from? Who the hell cares; it was just so good to see that he’s still got it. Welcome back Owen! There’s been so much written about Owen’s comeback (and deservedly so) that I won’t waste too much time revisiting. Suffice to say that we certainly missed the boat regarding him as a fantasy suggestion. We weren’t Robinson Crusoe there though. What I did want to make clear was that, despite some of the grievances that I’m about to spew forth, I have absolutely... Read more

Contest Overview - 2017 QuikPro Gold Coast

Can you feel it? The pre-Gold Coast buzz of a new season just about to pop its cork? Sure, the WSL may have lost its CEO and main sponsor. Sure, the forecast is for yet another pumping week of surf prior to the desolate wasteland that is the waiting period forecast. But, BUT, all is forgiven in the frenzied anticipation of a clean slate. No? What is there to look forward to, you ask? Well, there’s the fact that we have the best surfer in the world as the reigning... Read more

2017 QuikPro Gold Coast Projections

The Gold Coast season opener is fast approaching and it's time to crunch the numbers. This data uses the 2014-2016 results to formulate projections. 2017 rookies include some data from previous WSL events where applicable and some data from the 2016 WQS. This means that they have much less reliable data and have skewed projections due to their averages being heavily influenced by a limited number of WSL results. Many also have no previous experience at this event. Mikey on the other hand has data that is only drawn from... Read more

Injury & Wildcard Update - QuikPro Gold Coast 2017

Updated...   We're less than a day away from the new season, but we're still awaiting finalised heat draw and wildcard announcement from the WSL. Obviously we'll update this page as news comes to hand, but here's what we know so far: Nat Young - IN as trials winner A few people said that Nat would be back after he fell off tour last year. What they didn't mention was that he'd be back immediately. Nat isn't your typical trials winner in... Read more

Contest Wash-Up - Pipe Masters 2016

The forecast was bleak, the title sewn up, and my personal fantasy team wasn’t even playing for pride anymore in my private leagues. I was steeling myself for a hefty serve of disappointment at Pipe this year by keeping my expectations as low as possible. Robert Burns claimed that ‘suspense is worse than disappointment’, which sucks if it’s true because, in the end, Pipe gave us both. Qualification talk was the new black, and everybody was happy to chat. Here’s how we saw Pipe, in point form for those who... Read more

Notes From the Line-Up: Conner Coffin

We have a great final ‘notes from the line-up’ interview this year, with Meo Pro finalist, Santa Barbara native, rail surfing connoisseur, 2016 ROTY hopeful and Jordy Smith's new best friend, Conner Coffin. Conner has taken time out of his Hawaiian winter to talk tour life and fantasy surfing over the past few weeks. Some parts were done prior to the Sunset event, while others were done today - hence the qualification comments at the end and the two-stage reference to his season at Pipe thus far. Enjoy.   Read more

Injuries & Wildcard Update - Billabong Pipe Masters

Here is the draw & updated wildcard/injury replacement info for the Billabong Pipe Masters 2016 (8th - 20th December) INJURIES Owen Wright and Mick Fanning will again be OUT. Bede Durbidge - IN Bede will make his first WCT appearance in 2016 at Pipe. He competed in both Haliewa and Sunset, and while he only made one heat, he seems to be building. Keep in mind Bede is a former Pipe Master, and he also coached John John Florence to victory... Read more

Contest Analysis - Billabong Pipe Masters 2016

Maybe it’s a recalibration now that Pipe means nothing for the 2016 title chase. Maybe I’ve been sadistically revelling in the cruel twists and turns of the qualification dance, with failure threatening tour surfers like the shears of Atropos. Maybe it’s just been the appeal of quality of surfing in good waves. Whatever the cause, I’ve been digging the 2016 Triple Crown events this Hawaiian winter and, despite John John threatening to wear surf-journalist narratives perilously thin with his constant winning, Pipe has arrived on the back of some good,... Billabong Pipe Masters Projections

This data uses the 2014/2015/2016 results and gives a slight weighting to 2016 form within the projections. Many of the less experienced surfers (less reliable data) have skewed projections due to their averages being heavily influenced by this season's results and having no previous experience at this event. Italo, Wiggolly and Asing have only one year's worth of data at this event. Don't just rely on our projections alone; we suggest that you check the forecast, sort through the columns yourselves and pick out the elements that you believe to... Read more
