Notes From The Line-Up - Nate Yeomans

Last updated September 8, 2016 by Dave

Ok, so we’re a little bit late on this one. The contest window has officially started, however because the horn hasn’t sounded on Round 1 yet there is still time to make some last second changes to your fantasy teams.
For this episode of Notes From The Line-Up we are lucky enough to have caught up with local So-Cal ripper and former WCT competitor Nate Yeomans. Nate is an extremely talented surfer with a fighters spirit, as featured on this recent WSL blog post. He has seen the highs and lows of competitors surfing, and has been kind enough to share his insights into the Trestles Hurley Pro 2016 with us at Surf Stats.
We caught up with the moustachioed goofy-footer via email, just as the Womens ‘CT event was taking to the water..
Hi Nate. How is the surf looking over there in Cali? Everyone pretty pumped?
The waves today were pretty inconsistent today, pretty average Lowers at best.  That south swell started to show tonight though, so I think tomorrow will be pretty darn fun.
Did you get a shot at the main event along with the Gudangs and Team Hurley?
Yes I was in the trials, but I didn’t make it out of the first round.  They held the trials at T-Street about a month ago.
Do you play any fantasy surfing leagues? Care to share your picks?
Ya I play on Fantasy Surfer. To be honest I always forget to change my team before the event starts. Since you brought it up I’m going to head over to the site after this and re pick my team.
Some say Lowers is the most hi-fi wave on tour. Others say it’s all about the rail-game. What are your thoughts on how best to approach it?
I like the fact that you’re able to do it all.  Rail turns, airs, pretty much anything is possible out there.  Its such a perfect wave really for any surfing contest, but especially the ‘CT. There’s enough push for the power surfers, but also has some of the best air sections with the lightest landing pads.
Who have you spotted out in the surf who has impressed you the most?
It’s been pretty small since all the ‘CT crew has shown up. I’ve been impressed with how Seabass has been surfing out there. Medina goes nuts on those lefts. Tanner and Brother are always stand outs when they’re in town. Slaters record out there is pretty crazy. Adriano consistently does well in the event.  Shit man, everyone surfs good out there!
The big question on everyone’s mind: have you seen JJF out in the surf and is he looking hampered at all by his knee injury?
I haven’t seen John out there yet,  but I guess he was out at one of the local beachies the other day and the groms were saying he was ripping. I know the groms freak just seeing any of those guys out around town, but they said he punted a couple sick airs, so that’s always a good sign to hear he was going for it.
Let’s pretend the contest site is a race track, and each surfer is a horse lined up at the gate waiting for the starting gun. Who is chomping at the bit for a chance to outrun all the other horses?
Tanner.  He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.  Plus I know he has a super good board under his feet and I don’t think there’s anyone that would debate his froth level isn’t through the roof on any given day, let alone now that he’s in the main event.
Good answer. Now that the contest window is open we can see the percentage that each surfer is owned by a fantasy team. Tanner has been started by 15% of the WSL game. If he goes well that will be a big points advantage for those teams. Would you back him as a dark horse to make it to the finals?
I would totally back him.  The kid’s super powerful and his air game has been looking really sharp.  I think he’s going to take down some big guns.
I would also love to see Brother finally perform to what he’s capable of out there. I think this is going to be his year to get a big result.
Agreed. So what’s next for Nate Yeomans?
Actually I’m now working for Lost Surfboards as their So-Cal sales rep. I’ve been really busy with that, which is rad and I’m really enjoying it. I’m still able to sneak out and surf in the prime events, but day to day I’m on the road hitting up all the accounts.  I tell you what, it definitely puts a bit more vinegar in my blood to kick ass when I’m able to put a jersey on.  To be able to just surf for a living is freaking amazing and if I’m able to string together a couple results in these primes and get back on the ‘CT, I would have no problem putting sales on the back burner for a couple years.
Oniell dropped me last April and I’m now surfing for Lost clothing, along with representing the surfboards in sales.  I’m super stoked on where I’m at and super blessed to have Lost backing me.  I’ll be competing in Portugal later this month along with surfing in the Triple Crown over in Hawaii.
And we’ll be following your progress with interest, it’d be great to see you back on the ‘CT again. Thanks a bunch Nate, it’s been great getting your insights!

Watch Nate’s mini-biopic from 2015, INNATE. It’s a quality film and a great insight into what it takes to become one of the elite surfers on the planet today.
